Young children traveling without a parent or legal guardian are considered to be Unaccompanied Minors. If you are allowing your child to fly alone as an unaccompanied minor, be sure to take every necessary precaution to ensure his or her safety.

Air India offers a dedicated service for children up to 12 years of age who are traveling without a parent or guardian, classifying them as Unaccompanied Minors (UM).

For travel on domestic routes within India, this service applies to children aged over 5 and under 12 years traveling alone.

Unaccompanied Minors are only accepted on flights operated solely by Air India. If a journey involves a connecting flight with another airline at a transit point (interline travel), Air India will not accept the child for travel.

To use this service, specific paperwork must be completed. The required form can be downloaded [here] or found in the "Download" section on the Air India website. The form must be submitted in three copies to the nearest Air India office at least 3 working days before the departure date.

In cases where children are flying in a separate class from their parent or guardian, they will be treated as Unaccompanied Minors. All relevant procedures recommended by IATA for UMs must be followed in such situations.

As per the current guidelines, standard protocols for handling Unaccompanied Minors remain in effect. The only adjustment is that the child will now be handed over to and received from the airline staff at the aircraft door - just before boarding and immediately after disembarkation.
